Visit to the Past with Roger Matney

Hinds House

December 2, 2015 Visit to the past with Roger Matney: I had a brief meeting with Roger this morning where he resides. This home, I believe could be the former home of Michael Hinds(Jr.). He pointed out the original portions of the house. R.C. Matney is the current owner of the property. Roger lives in in the home and farms the surrounding land. He gave me a simple history of the previous owners. The Howery family dwelled there in the mid 1960’s, Harry Everhart and family in the mid 1970’s and the house sat vacant some in the mid 1960’s and 1970’s. The Cox children that lived across the road would ride their bikes down the lane and play in the house while it was vacant. Roger seems to have some extensive knowledge of the area since he has lived in the vicinity since the 1960’s.He pointed out the old road beds which were very interesting. He presented me with the tombstone, which I believe says – “In Loving Memory of Lienia Hinds – died June 17, 1850. We discussed how the tombstone and remains were discovered. Several years ago during an excavating process for the home behind the original house, the excavator discovered a tombstone and remains. The excavator picked up a few bones and continued to excavate. When the general contractor heard this news he contacted the prosecuting attorney. At 10:00 p.m. one evening the county coroner showed up at Roger’s home. The coroner later told Roger that the remains where thought to be of a 15-16 year old girl. During our short discussion without prompting, he brought up the names: Lightfoot, Fox and Kaster. He mentioned that Margaret Lightfoot, who has passed, was the holder of the stories. Also, Marybelle Cramer, who resided on Morristown Rd., was very knowledgeable of the area, according to Roger. There have been several boxes of Indian artifacts removed from the property that Roger was aware of. There are high places in the nearby field that are thought to be graves as well. There is a high spot in a field a few yards from the river that has significance. .Rodger did not recall ever hearing of Hinds owning the property. I explained that Michael Hinds jr. had all girls. So, I told him I would look into researching the land deeds to solve our curiosity……….. More to the story- Dick Dovidas owns the neighboring land and on his land deed there are two graves. Ron McDanials (optometrist and history buff) is also a neighbor. There has been some sort of tiff with the two over a “talking rock.’ The rock originally sat near the river and Indians stood on it to speak.. The rock has been moved and I am not sure which one has it and they are not really speaking. They apparently ask about each other through other people. Another interesting fact is that another rock exists in Little Marion with the date 1834 which states that 8 families came from the west. Roger thinks this rock bears those families names. We spent less than an hour chatting due to the work he needed to complete before his surgery tomorrow. He said that we are welcome on the property. He said that it is quite pretty in the summer.

Chadwick’s History Shelby Co., Indiana; page 791

-Michael Hinds, father of the subject, was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania, where he married, when still a young man, Mary Smith, whose antecedents were also among the early settlers of that part of the state. Disposing of their interests in Pennsylvania in 1818, Michael Hinds and wife migrated to Franklin county, Indiana, where they lived until 1825, when they moved to Shelby county and settled in what is now Addison township, where in due time Mr. Hinds cleared a good farm and became widely known as an enterprising man and praiseworthy citizen. He took an active and influential part in opening the country and developing its resources. He was a true type of the sturdy pioneer of the early day, and his death, which occurred in the year 1844, was greatly lamented by his friends and neighbors.

-His wife survived him until 1868, when she, too, passed away, and the two now lie side by side in the quiet shades of the cemetery at Shelbyville. Michael and Mary Hinds were the parents of eight children, five of whom grew to maturity and became well settled in life, the subject of this review being the youngest of the number and the only surviving member of the family.

History of Shelby Co., Indiana; Brant & Fuller, 1887; page 637

William W. Hinds, one of the pioneers of this county, is a native of Franklin County, Indiana, born September 14, 1821. He is the third of eight children born to Michael and Mary (Smith) Hinds, natives of Pennsylvania, who in 1816 emigrated to Franklin County, where they lived until the spring of 1825, when they removed to Shelby county, near Shelbyville, where the father died in 1844 and the mother in 1861. They were of German descent. Our subject received but little education, having attended school but three months. He was raised on a farm, which pursuit he has always followed. Starting in life a poor boy, surrounded by dense forests, he has, by hard work and strict frugality, obtained a fair competency. He was never married, and for many years has made his home with his brother George, the youngest of the family, and was born in Shelby County, February 25, 1834, who was married April 25, 1861, to Eliza Bassett, daughter of Sylvester and Susan (Maroney) Bassett. By this marriage, there were born eight children as follows: Melvin B., 1862; Susan F., 1864; William B., 1866; Leonard, 1868; Jesse, 1870; Sylvester, 1873; James, 1875; and Mary, 1880. Politically, they are both Republicans. George was a soldier in Company F., Thirty-eighth Indiana. He was mustered out June 22, 1865, and was as gallant a soldier as ever carried a musket. William now owns eighty-three acres of land in Section 19 and George 205, on same section. These brothers have both lived industrious lives, and are now among the leading citizens of Hanover Township, loved and respected by all who know them.

Hinds decd, and that the said Kaster is Guardian of the minor heris [sp per document] of said Hinds for moneys that come to them from the rents of said wards Real Estate, that the said Mayhew is Guardian for said heirs for moneys that came to them from their mothers estate: that the amount of personal estate or assetts that have come into said Administrators hands including everything but the Real Estate of the Decedent, is not sufficient to pay the claims against the Estate by about Eleven Hundred Dollars: that all the personal estate of the decedent has been exhausted and nothing remains to pay the indebtedness of the same, but the Real Estate belonging to said wards, which cannot now be sold without great sacrifice and injure to them; that there is now a Judgment in this court amounting to about $800,00 which the parties are now -r/s-r/nding for payment:   And said parties Sleeth, Kaster and Mayhew further say that said Mayhew has in his hands funds of said ward amounting to about Four Hundred Dollars, and said Kaster has in his hands funds of said wards amounting to about Five Hundred ($500) Dollars and believing it wold be greatly for the interest of said wards to apply this amount now in their hands, as well as the rents that may be received from said Wards Real Estate to the payment of debts due and owing from said Estate till the same are fully paid and discharged, and thereby preventing the sale of their Real Esate by said Administrator: they ask the Court to grant the said Guardians Kaster & Mayhew an order to apply the money now in their hands to the payment of said debts against said Estate or pay the same to the Administrator for said purpose, and also, that all the rents and profits of the Real Estate of said wards, not needed for their education, mentainance & support, and payment of taxes, cost and expenses of the Guardianships may be applied to the payment of said debts as before stated.

Death was caused by a complication of diseases and resulted after a long illness. His relatives were at his bedside when death occurred. Mr. Hinds was one of the pioneer residents of the county and was well known by many of the older residents. He had lived in Shelby county all of his life. Mr. Hinds was born in Addison township February 25, 1834, and at the time of his death was aged eighty years, five months and two days. He worked on a farm from early youth. During the winter he attended school which was held in an old log building near his home. At fifteen he started out to make his living. He worked on a farm for 50 cents daily for his labor. Then he and his brother, James bought a small farm in partnership. Later they sold out and each bought a place of their own. Mr. Hinds lived on a farm until 1896, when he disposed of his interests and moved to Morristown, where he has since resided. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having enlisted in 1864 as a member of company D, 38th infantry. He took part in the battle of Nashville and several other engagements in that vicinity. Mr. Hinds was a life long Republican. He cast his first presidential vote in 1856 for John C. Freemont, the Republican nominee. He was a member of the Morristown M. E. church and one of its staunch supporters. He was married on April 25, 1861 to Miss Eliza Bassett, who survives her husband. >>Mr. Leonard Hinds, of Morristown, who accidently shot himself Tuesday afternoon while near the residence of Mort Howell, in Marion township, will probably die. He is now unconscious and is growing weaker. Mr. Hinds lives in Morristown where he is engaged in the business of selling agricultural implements and buggies. Tuesday he started out with one of his men to sell a carriage, he having the vehicle loaded on the wagon in which he was riding. When near the home of his supposed customer he saw the rig of a competitor and he stopped to wait for him to go away. While his team was standing along the side of the road Grant Wicker drove up, stopped, got out of his buggy and going to the rig of Mr. Hinds placed his foot on one of the hubs and was taking to him when the accident took place. The man who was with Mr. Hinds had gone into the woods with a rifle to kill a squirrel and Mr. Hinds had his shotgun leaning across his right breast with the butt resting on the side of the wagon bed. He reached his hand into his pocket to get his knife, the motion causing the gun to fall on the outside. As it went down the hammers caught on the step discharging both barrels. The loads cut his clothing across the chest and entered the body at the neck cutting out the leaders and flesh, tearing away a part of the jaw and entering the back part of the head exposing the lower part of the brain. The wound is such that hardly a ray of hope is entertained for his recovery. Mr. Hinds is about forty years old, is married and is a brother of Mrs. Charles Walker, of this city.

Obituary, Shelbyville News, Shelbyville, IN; Wednesday 23 November 1960

Sheriff and state police officers have completed their investigation today of the auto-truck crash at the intersection of State Road 9 and U.S. 52 in which Mrs. Leonard (Mary Catherine) Haseman, 46, of Morristown, was killed. County Coroner Dr. James Tower attributed Mrs. Haseman’s death to internal injuries. Authorities said Mrs. Haseman was going to work at Community Hospital in Indianapolis where she was employed as a registered nurse when the crash occurred at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday. Elizabeth Hinds, 59, 1530 N. Illinois St., Indianapolis, a sister of the accident victim and a passenger in Mrs. Haseman’s car, received a fractured right arm and possible fractures of the skull and ribs. She was reported in “fair” condition at Major Hospital today. Mrs. Haseman died at the accident scene a few minutes after her car was in collision with a two-ton lime truck operated by George Couch, 37, 423 S. Mount St., Greenfield. Couch received slight injuries. Deputy Sheriff Edward Treon and State Trooper Richard Westlake conducted the investigation. It was the 10th traffic fatality for Shelby county this year and the second this month, the last being 15 month old Acie Gene Gwaltney, Jr., R. R. 2, Equality, Ill., who lost his life when his father’s car went over an embankment at Norristown Nov. 2. Treon and Westlake reported Mrs. Haseman’s car was going west on 52 and the truck was heading south on Road 9. Officers said the truck apparently went through the intersection on the yellow caution light. A Greenfield doctor and a woman at a nearby service station were witnesses to the crash. Officers said the doctor estimated the truck was traveling some 20 miles an hour and that the car appeared “to be going too fast for the intersection.” Both Mrs. Haseman and Miss Hinds were thrown out of the car through the door on the passenger side. The local emergency ambulance and a Greenfield private ambulance were at the scene of the accident. The Haseman car was called a total loss with damage set at $550. Damage to the truck was placed at $1,000 and a traffic light pole which was broken off was valued at $200. Officers said it wasn’t determined which vehicle struck the pole. Mrs. Haseman was graduated from Morristown High School in 1932 and from the Community Hospital School of Nursing in 1935. During World War II she served with the Army Nurses Corps. She was born in Shelby county June 30, 1914, a daughter of James and Mary (Warfield) Hinds. Her marriage to Leonard Haseman took place Nov. 1, 1940, and surviving with him are three children, Mary Beth, Jane Ann and Frederick Lee Haseman, all at home. Also surviving with the sister, Miss Hinds, is a brother, Walter Hinds, Indianapolis. Mrs. Haseman was a member of the Morristown Methodist church. The church pastor, the Rev. Paul T. Jump, and the Rev. Richard Rasche of Indianapolis will officiate at funeral services Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Frazier Funeral Home in Morristown. Burial will be in Hanover cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday.

Another of his cases is that of Lavanchie Hinds, the four year old daughter of Mr. Melvin Hinds, who lives in Hanover township. The child was killed by a wagon bed falling on her.
